Wednesday night brings us action from the second tier on the Portuguese domestic scene and I have a few picks from this midweek set of fixtures, beginning with hosts Academica looking to bounce back from a recent defeat tonight when they take on Sporting Covilha at their Estádio EFAPEL.
Academica lost 2-1 away at mid-table Uniao Madeira, but they have a good opportunity to redeem themselves on home turf this evening and all three points here could lift them up into third spot at the expense of Varzim.
With an impressive home record that reads 9-2-2 17/7 under their belts so far this season, the home side look in good shape to continue their winning streak which stands at six wins on the trot to date – this could be a seventh win on the bounce.
Visitors Sporting Covilha sit in mid-table in the Portuguese Segunda Liga despite registering recent back-to-back league wins over Olhanense and Sporting Braga B, but it’s been their home form in the main that has prevented them from slipping down into the bottom half of the division.
That said, Sporting Covilha have put together a run of eight matches without defeat away from home prior to their visit to Academica which includes wins at Vitoria Guimaraes, Academico Viseu and the aforementioned Sporting Braga B.
But an overall away record of 3-6-3 10/10 suggests that they’d be happy to take a point home with them here against a side that are desperately trying to run down the top two teams in the division in order to gain promotion to the Primeira Liga.
