Ajax bounced back from their slightly unexpected defeat to Rapid Vienna in the Champions League recently by starting their new Dutch Eredivisie campaign with back-to-back wins.
The famous Dutch side narrowly lost 5-4 on aggregate over their two-legged affair with Rapid Vienna, but they have a second bite of the cherry now in the Europa League as they look to progress in the ‘second tier’ european competition.
Ajax have started strongly in their domestic league, winning both of their opening league games 3-0 against AZ Alkmaar (away) and Saturday’s 3-0 home win over Willem II which has lifted them into top position in the early stages of the season.
Czech Republic visitors Jablonec progressed through to the play-off stages in this season’s Europa League thanks to scoring more away goals than their last opponents Copenhagen as both teams won away from home.
Copenhagen won the first leg 1-0 away at Jablonec, but then the Czech Republic side returned the favour when they won the second leg 3-2 in Denmark which sent them through to meet Ajax over two legs starting tonight.
However, this could be a tough assignment for Jablonec this time around as they’ve managed just three away wins in this competition from their last seven on the road with wins at Flamurtari Vlore, Stromsgodset and Copenhagen – none of whom are in the same company as Ajax.
I’ll therefore back the hosts Ajax to get the jump on Jablonec here tonight with perhaps a 1-0 or 2-1 win to set them up for the second leg.
