The Stade de France will be the venue for the Coupe de France final between rank outsiders Angers, and French domestic giants, PSG in what has been dubbed by many as a one-sided contest before a ball has been kicked.
Unfancied Angers finished in a respectable and creditable mid-table position in Ligue 1 at the end of the regular league season, and they can now come into this cup final with absolutely nothing to lose, and everything to gain as the winner of this cup final will gain automatic qualification for the Europa League.
Angers made their way to the final having gained wins in the last 32 away at Granville 2-1, last 16 win 3-1 home win over Caen, a last eight away win at Bastia 1-0, quarter-final home win over Bordeaux 2-1 and a 2-0 semi-final home win over Guingamp. They must therefore be respected here despite the long odds against them.
PSG come into this Coupe de France having seen their long standing position of power usurped by Ligue 1 title winners Monaco this season, and by a large margin of eight points – something that PSG used to achieve on a consistent basis, year in year out in previous seasons.
However, there has been a distinct power shift this season, with one of the reasons being that PSG’s prolific striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic moved to Manchester United, and although Edison Cavani (35 goals) has shouldered the goalscoring responsibility admirably, he’s pretty much had to do it all on his own this term.
But to write off PSG in this final would be pure folly as they now have the extra incentive, and expectation, that they must walk off with a trophy this season having lost out in the title race. Automatic Champions League qualification may not be enough to calm the native in Paris I fancy.
