Argentina will tell you that everything is still under control with just six CONMEBOL group matches remaining of the group phase, as they find themselves in fifth place and eight points adrift of group leaders Brazil ahead of their clash with Chile.
Although Argentina are indeed just a single point behind the teams currently situated in the World Cup automatic qualification spots, Ecuador and Chile, they cannot take anything for granted given their disappointing and lacklustre World Cup qualifying campaign to date.

Visitors Chile are one of the teams that sit above Argentina in the automatic spots for Russia 2018 ahead of their trip to Argentina for this important encounter, and they’ve been in reasonable form in recent times as they’ve suffered just one defeat from their last five matches.
Recent wins gained over Bolivia, Peru and Uruguay have put them in the mix for an automatic qualification berth, but it’s worth bearing in mind that all three of these wins were registered on home soil.
Conversely, Chile’s away record stands at an unconvincing 2-1-3 9/12 and they’ve found it tough going on the road in this campaign despite wins over Peru and Venezuela, as they’ve also tasted defeat at Uruguay, Paraguay and Ecuador.
Any team that has a certain Lionel Messi in their ranks must stand more than just a slim chance of success, and so I’m backing Argentina here to get the job done on home turf.
