Stoke could edge Villa in low-scoring affair

ASTON VILLA v STOKE CITY

Football – England – Premier League Betting Tips

Aston Villa lurched to another defeat last Saturday when they were beaten 3-2 away at Liverpool which has left the midlands club in the bottom three of the Premier League which is in stark contrast to the euphoria that the club experienced when Tim Sherwood first took over the reigns.

The honeymoon period however seems to be well and truly over as Sherwood’s side currently occupy one of the relegation places having gained just one win so far in this new season which was a 1-0 win away at newcomers Bournemouth on the opening day of the season.

Since that opening day win, Aston Villa have lost five of their next six Premier League matches with defeats at home to Manchester United and west midlands rivals West Brom along with just a point against lowly Sunderland. Villa’s overall home record therefore stands at a below-par  0-1-2  2/4 and they’ve won just twice from their last eight at Villa Park.

Visitors Stoke City haven’t fared much better mind you, as Mark Hughes’ side sit just one leage place and two points above today’s hosts Aston Villa. However, Sparky’s side have won their last two matches overall on the trot with a 1-0 win away at Championship side Fulham in the Capital One Cup which was followed up with a 2-1 home win over Bournemouth last weekend.

On the road, Stoke have lost just once which was a 2-0 loss at the Emirates Stadium to Arsenal last time out which is no disgrace, but they have previously gained points off Tottenham and Norwich City on their travels in 2-2 and 1-1 draws respectively.

The Potters’ away record therefore stands at  0-2-1  3/5 and they’ve only lost two of their last six away from home in the Premier League.

This looks like being a nervy, tight affair even at this stage of the season with both teams desperate to pull away from the lower reaches of the division. I can’t rule out the draw, however, I’ll back Stoke with the quarter-ball as they seem the likelier to get the points. Could be a 1-0 win for Stoke.
