Mid-table Athletic Bilbao can move up within touching distance of the Europa League places in the Spanish top flight if they manage to take all three points against visiting Deportivo La Coruna when the two teams meet at the San Mamés Barria in Bilbao on Saturday evening,
Athletic Bilbao have suffered just one defeat from their last six matches overall in La Liga which was last weekend’s understandable 3-0 defeat at Barcelona, but recent wins over Celta Vigo and Sporting Gijon along with draws against Deportivo Alaves, Leganes and Atletico Madrid will have given them confidence.
Bilbao also possess a solid home record of 7-3-1 19/11 which includes an unbeaten run of ten league matches ahead of tonight’s clash. Incidentally, their one defeat on home turf all season was a 1-0 loss to the aforementioned Barcelona.
Visitors Deportivo La Coruna currently occupy 15th place on the Spanish top flight league ladder and they do have a bit of breathing space above the relegation zone, but this is largely down to having registered all four of their wins this season at their Estadio Municipal de Riazor.
Deportivo’s last La Liga success came in the shape of a 1-0 home win over bottom club Osasuna back in mid-December, but they’ve since gone four league matches without a win following stalemates with Espanyol, Villarreal and Las Palmas, along with a 3-1 defeat at Eibar.
Deportivo’s exploits away from home have yet to see them win on their travels amidst an overall record of 0-5-6 10/22 and this poor run could be extended further in Bilbao this evening.
