It’s the last round of matches of the Swiss Super League season starting tonight when hosts and title winners Basel take on Grasshoppers at their St. Jakob-Park as the home side look to end their successful season on a high note.
Basel have suffered just one defeat from their last 19 matches overall in the Swiss top flight which was a surprise heavy 4-0 defeat away at Luzern a couple of weeks ago, but with a formidable looking home record of 14-2-1 44/14 under their belts so far, they look a solid unit on home turf.
In addition, they’re unbeaten in their last nine at St. Jakob-Park, a run that includes seven wins and they have scored a total of 25 goals and conceded just 7 in reply during this nine-game sequence. Strikers Janko (16 goals) and Embolo (10 goals) are the main threats up front for the home side.
Visitors and fourth placed Grasshoppers desperately need to secure all three points in tonight’s clash in Basel to make certain of their Europa League spot which they currently occupy. However, they have Sion breathing down their necks just one point behind them with just one league match remaining.
Grasshoppers’ saving grace though could be that Sion have to travel to third placed Luzern and win which is a tough ask, and Grasshoppers could secure their european spot by default rather than victory tonight.
This looks even more likely when you consider that Grasshoppers have managed just two league wins from their last 11 matches overall (wins over St Gallen and Lugano) who are both in the bottom half of the Swiss Super League.
Grasshoppers need a win but Basel should be too strong on home turf to lose.
