Basel have been drawn in a tough Champions League Group A alongside Arsenal, PSG and tonight’s opponents Ludogorets in this year’s elite european competition, and although it’s very early and a little unfair, this opening game may well be one of the deciders as to who finishes in third place!
Basel head into Tuesday night’s Champions League encounter having won their last eight matches in all competitions on the trot including Saturday’s 3-1 home win over Grasshopper in the Swiss Super League and they have been in impressive form at their St Jakob-Park ground in recent times.
Basel have won their last four matches on the trot which were all gained in the domestic Super League with wins over Sion, Young Boys and Lugano as well as the aforementioned Grasshopper victory. Watch for strikers Doumbia and Janko to link up again this evening.
Visitors Bulgarian outfit Ludogorets seem to be the weak link in this Group A but they’ll nevertheless head into tonight’s encounter in reasonably confident mood having disposed of Viktoria Plzen in the play-offs stages with a 4-2 aggregate win which included holding the Czech Republic side to a 2-2 draw away from home.
Ludogorets hold a relatively small sample of results history away from home though in the Champions League and they lost four matches on the trot back in 2014 and 2015 where they lost to Liverpool, tonight’s opponents Basel, Real Madrid and Milsami.
The draw at Plzen was a good result but it’s now a big step up into the group stages and I fancy the hosts to grab the points here as they seek a good start against the perceived ‘weaker’ opposition.
