Champions League Tips

Tuesday 14th February 2016 Kickoff: 1945hrs Benfica v Borussia Dortmund Football – Europe – Champions League The Champions League returns this week with the last 16 matches spread out across the next fortnight. Benfica welcome Borussia Dortmund to Lisbon on Tuesday in a game that looks pretty evenly balanced on current form. Dortmund are favourites to progress over the course of the two legs and will be making their second trip to the city this season having played Benfica’s arch rivals Sporting in the qualifying campaign. Rui Vitoria will be hoping his players can achieve a better result against the Germans than Sporting achieved, ahead of the next leg.

Benfica survived losing their final game in qualification to finish in second spot in their group. Although the Portuguese champions won just twice in their section, the eight points they accumulated was just about enough to ensure they made out the knockout stage once again. In contrast to previous seasons they were very inconsistent at home winning one, losing one and drawing one. Their sole win was against Dynamo Kiev and even that was an unconvincing victory. In fairness to Benfica, the defeat at home to Napoli on match day six is actually the only time a visiting team have left with a win from the Estadio da Luz this term. With just two defeats in their last 10 at home in the Champions League then it suggests Benfica will fancy their chances of taking a lead to Germany at the beginning of March.

Borussia Dortmund surprised a few people by topping their group ahead of Real Madrid. The Germans had to avoid defeat on match day six to ensure they finished ahead of the European champions and, in theory, give themselves a kinder tie in the first knockout phase. They managed to achieve that by coming back from two goals down and it meant they went through the section without losing a game. That’s an indication of how good this team can be but the main issue for them is matching that quality with consistency. That’s no more evidenced by the fact that they have beaten Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga this season but remain unable to sustain a title challenge. Saturday’s defeat away to bottom of the table Darmstadt means they now sit in fourth, nine points adrift of Bayern at the top. Attention will obviously now switch to European matters and it could be argued that the knockout format of this competition could see Dortmund excel.

Benfica v Borussia Dortmund Betting Tips

This promises to be a really exciting couple of games between two teams who have plenty of goals and attacking flair laced throughout their squads. Benfica lost out twice to Napoli in the group stage and that’s probably the best barometer to how they compare with Dortmund as they are simply dominant domestically in Portugal. Dortmund, on the other hand, were not at their best in the two games against Sporting but still had enough to win both games and they will see this tie as one that gives them an excellent chance of making the quarter finals.

It can often be difficult to assess the first leg of these games, not least because the competition is making a return itself from two months off. Benfica have been trucking along domestically whereas their opponents have struggled to put a run of form together which they would have liked to have done coming into this. Over the course of the two games I would side with Dortmund to get the job done but it’s going to be difficult for them on Tuesday at a stadium where the home team rarely lose. Had the Germans been in better form then I would be keen on them getting the win but Benfica are in a good place just now and can avoid defeat to give them a chance in three weeks time.
