Besiktas are another side that are chasing down a deficit in the second leg of their Europa League quarter-final with French outfit Lyon following last week’s first leg 2-1 defeat in France.
But both Besiktas and Lyon have suspended bans lingering over their heads following crowd trouble ahead of last week’s first leg which delayed the start of the game by 45 minutes, and this evening’s second leg may also be shrouded in controversy as the tie heats up in Turkey.
Besiktas progressed through the knockout stages of this season’s Europa League thanks to a round of 32 win over Hapoel Be’er Sheva and a last 16 win over Greek giants Olympiakos where they registered a heavy 4-1 home win with a large slice of the second leg being played with 10 men.
Lyon therefore hold a one goal advantage as they make their way to Turkey for this evening’s decisive leg, but they know they’ll be stepping into an intimidating cauldron of noise as the home fans bay for a home win tonight.
Lyon recorded a massive 11-2 aggregate win over AZ Alkmaar in the round of 32 having won 4-1 away from home, they then followed that up with a demoralising 7-1 victory at home over the hapless Dutch side. The round of 16 saw Lyon overcome Italian side AS Roma 5-3 on aggregate, so goals have been flowing for the French side.
However, the goals have also been going in at the other end for Lyon too which will be a concern ahead of this second leg as they look to contain Besiktas at their Vodafone Arena in Istanbul.
With both of these teams qualifying for the knockout stages of the Europa League as best third placed teams in the Champions League, I can see them both scoring again tonight.
