With the international break looming, here’s a chance to check out the English lower leagues this weekend…
Bolton Wanderers retained their unbeaten status in League One last weekend when they earned a good point away at Charlton Athletic at The Valley, and Bolton will be looking to at least extend their unbeaten run (if not take all three points) when Southend United pay a visit to the Macron Stadium.
Following last season’s absolutely disastrous campaign in the Championship which saw The Trotters relegated after an abject season, they have started this new League One campaign in postive fashion; four wins fro their first five matches has posted them top of the division ahead of this weekend.
Bolton’s home form has started well too as they’ve won both of their opening home games against Sheffield United and Fleetwood Town respectively, with striker Madine (3 goals) well supported by midfielders Spearing and Vela (2 goals apiece).
Visitors Southend United, usually there or thereabouts in the top six of this division, find themselves languishing in 19th place in League One after an ordinary start to their new season. The Shrimps have gained just one win from their first five so far, which was a 3-0 win away at fellow strugglers Sheffield United, but their form overall in League One has dipped severely.
Indeed, it’s just two league wins from their last 15 matches at this level which will raise serious concerns over this campaign if they can’t improve things quickly, and prior to the Sheffield United win, Southend had lost their previous six away matches on the trot.
Therefore, confidence can’t be high in the Southend camp while Bolton are positively buzzing at the moment – I’ll back the hosts to take the points here.
