Bordeaux earned a valuable point away at Saint Etienne on the weekend in the French Ligue 1 which opened their account in their domestic league following an opening day loss to Reims at home.
They now turn their attentions to the european stage as they take on Kazakhstan outfit Kairat Almaty at their Stade Jacques Chaban-Delmas ground in the first leg of the Europa League play-offs.
Bordeaux progressed through to this stage on the back of a solid showing against Cypriot side AEK Larnaca with Bordeaux winning the home leg 3-0 and taking the second leg away from home in a 1-0 win in Cyprus.
Visitors Kairat Almaty are currently involved in the Championship round in their domestic Kazakhstan Premier League season and currently lie second in the six-team second phase having drawn 0-0 away at Ordabasy Shymkent on the weekend.
They now have a tough trip ahead of them as they make the trip to France away at Bordeaux who have important home advantage in this opening leg. Kairat’s performances away from home in this Europa League competition haven’t always been successful either.
Just one win on their travels which was a 2-0 win away at Serbian side Crvena Zvezda amongst defeats at Esbjerg and Alashkert along with draws at Kukesi and Aberdeen (the latter being a two-legged win over the Scottish Premier League side to reach this stage).
But I have to go with the home side here to take a lead into the second leg, so I’ll back Bordeaux to cover the -1 asian line in perhaps a 2-0 win.
