This weekend’s action in the Brazilian top flight wraps up this evening when Botafogo take on bottom club Avai at their Estádio Nilton Santos in Rio de Janeiro with the hosts looking to chalk up a third consecutive Serie A win.
Recent back-to-back wins for Botafogo against Chapecoense and Vasco da Gama have helped lift them within touching distance of the coveted top six positions in the division, and with home advantage behind them tonight, they could well break into the early Copa Libertadores positions after tonight’s 90 minutes.
It’s still early in the domestic season, but Botafogo still remain unbeaten on home turf, boasting a 3-1-0 8/3 record and are punching above their weight a little as they are more than holding their own against the bigger clubs so far. Wins over Ponte Preta, Bahia and Vasco da Gama have set them up nicely.
Visitors Avai cannot claim the same great start to the new Brazilian Serie A campaign unfortunately, as they’ve managed to secure just one win from their first nine matches of the season, which was a 1-0 home win over bottom half outfit Sport Recife.
Avai returned to Serie A following promotion from Serie B at the end of last season, but they’re finding life at the top very tough at the moment.
But it’s Avai’s away record and results which has left them bottom of the pile to date as they’ve lost all five of their encounters on their travels with a very poor record of 0-0-5 1/9. Avai have really struggled to get anything out of their away trips, and indeed they’ve actually now gone 11 matches without a win.
