Sporting Braga can make their Europa League spot certain for next season if they take all three points against struggling Vitoria Setubal when the two teams clash at the Estádio Municipal de Braga on Friday night with just three league matches remaining in the Portuguese Primeira Liga.
However, Braga have posted some mixed results in recent weeks as they’ve chalked up wins over the likes of Porto, Uniao Madeira and Tondela, but have also suffered defeats to Benfica and Pacos de Ferreira, although it should be noted (along with a defeat to Belenenses), that all three of these losses were away from home.
Braga boast a very good home record though of 10-4-1 38/11 and they’re unbeaten in their last nine on home turf, while their record at home against bottom half opposition stands at an imposing 7-2-0 20/2 with strikers Koka and Stojilikovic eager to add to their 10-goal tallies apiece.
Visitors Setubal have now gone 12 league matches without a win in the Portuguese top flight and indeed have lost six of their last seven overall as the rot has well and truly set in for the visitors who sit fourth from bottom in the division.
But with just three matches remaining of the season and holding a five-point cushion ahead of second from bottom club Academica, they would count themselves extremely unfortunate to be relegated from this position. By my reckoning, they probably need just one more point to guarantee Primeira Liga safety, but it’s hard to see them achieving this in Braga tonight.
Setubal’s away record stands at 4-3-8 22/27 and they’re without a win on their travels from their last eight attempts so their confidence is pretty fragile to say the least!
