Battle of the Clarets could end in stalemate

Saturday 29th November 2014 – Kickoff: 1500hrs

Both Burnley and Aston Villa go into this afternoon’s clash at Turf Moor on the back of perhaps unexpected results with Burnley taking the honours at the Britannia Stadium winning 2-1 against Stoke City, while Aston Villa held second placed Southampton to a nervy 1-1 draw at Villa Park on Monday night.

Burnley have registered back-to-back Premiership wins for the first time this season, and they have lifted themselves off the bottom of the table thanks also to a narrow 1-0 home win over Hull City last weekend. They now host an Aston Villa outfit who are still firmly ensconced near the relegation zone despite avoiding defeat in their last two matches.

Burnley’s home record stands at  1-2-3  4/9 and last weekend’s win over Hull was their first at Turf Moor this season. Aside from that, The Clarets have also held Manchester United and Sunderland to draws, both matches ending in 0-0 stalemates.

Visitors Aston Villa continued to stem the flow of recent defeats with a well-earned point against in-form Southampton in a 1-1 draw at Villa Park. They’ve now avoided defeat away at West Ham and against Southampton who are both sat in the top six of the Premier League, and manager Paul Lambert will no doubt be looking for more of the same at Burnley today.

Villa have prevented six straight league defeats from becoming anything more sinister for now, but they still remain in the lower reaches of the Premier League and are just two positions and two points above Leicester City who occupy the last relegation spot.

Aston Villa’s away record stands at  2-1-3  2/8 and they have gone four matches without a win on the road (losing three of those), while in addition failing to score in each of those matches too. In fact, Aston Villa’s failure to hit the back of the net away from home has escalated to 9 scoreless trips in their last 13.

This fixture certainly looks like it could well be a low-scoring affair, and I’m sensing further value on the draw here as both teams will be keen to continue their unbeaten run. Could be a dour 0-0 draw.
