Burton Albion head into this afternoon’s encounter with Southend United on the back of a four-match unbeaten run in their inaugural season in League One where they have made an instant impact under manager Jimmy Floyd-Hasselbaink.
Burton gained promotion from League Two at the end of last season and it has been a meteoric rise for the former Conference side whose former managers include Nigel Clough, Roy McFarland and Gary Rowett. The Brewers have won three of their last four with wins over Rochdale, Swindon Town and Chesterfield before being held to a 0-0 stalemate with Sheffield United last Saturday.
Nevertheless, surprise package Burton Albion remain top of League One with a single point margin ahead of second placed Walsall, but Burton’s form at the Pirelli Stadium has been pivotal to their recent successes in the past few seasons.
Visitors Southend United are also in good nick as they’ve won their last three on the trot with wins over Millwall, Scunthorpe United and Crewe Alexandra although the latter two teams are currently in the bottom third of the division.
That said, Southend still remain unbeaten on their travels with an overall record of 2-3-0 7/4 with recent wins at Millwall and Crewe, but they’re likely to face a much tougher test this afternoon at the fortress Pirelli Stadium.
However, it’s just two away wins from The Shrimps’ last 16 away matches so I suggest we don’t get too carried away with their away form this season just yet!
Burton have continued to be a tough outfit to beat on their home turf and I’ll side with them again here not to lose and back them with the round ball option – Burton could win this perhaps 1-0.
