This Sunday features a few local derbies around the footballing globe and my next pick is a north of the border clash between bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic and Rangers in the Scottish Cup semi-final at Hampden Park with bragging rights up for grabs once again.
Celtic sit proudly on top of the Scottish Premiership once again this season as The Hoops have remained unbeaten in the league throughout the whole of this campaign to date, and they hold a massive 24-point lead over second placed Aberdeen who have taken over from Rangers as primary contenders to Celtic.
The hosts have also held the upper hand in recent meetings against the old foe as they’ve collected four wins from the last six encounters with Rangers, and they surely should have the upper hand in this contest too.
Visitors Rangers have had to endure a few seasons of exile from the Scottish top flight in recent times, but they’ve now returned to the Premiership although their position is no longer on equal footing with rivals Celtic as players of superior quality have since left the club during the recent turmoil at Ibrox.
Rangers are therefore no longer the force they once were although they do sit third in the Premiership to date this season. But a 33-point gap between themselves and Celtic just underlines the gulf that now exists between these two sides, and it’ll be a long road back for Rangers I fancy to stay pace with Celtic.
Rangers have been in impressive form at Ibrox but they’ve managed just one league win from their last six outings on their travels, so today represents a stern test for them.
