Chapecoense bounced back from last Wednesday night’s defeat away at Palmeiras with a much-needed 1-0 home win over Vasco da Gama at the weekend, which will no doubt have given them a timely boost ahead of entertaining Gremio tonight.
Chapecoense currently occupy 9th place in the Brazilian Serie A and their current league position is largely thanks to a pretty solid home record which strands at 4-1-1 7/3 where they’ve lost just once so far this season.
Chape have registered some valuable wins to date with victories over Coritiba, Santos, Joinville and Vasco da Gama along with a draw against third placed Sport Recife in a 1-1 stalemate. However, it should be remembered that these four wins all came against the bottom four teams in the division, and Gremio are sure to be a much tougher opponent.
Onto Gremio then, and they extended their winning streak to five matches with a 3-1 away win at struggling Santos which lifted them up into second place in Serie A just below Atletico Mineiro on goal difference.
Three of Gremio’s recent wins came at their Arena do Grêmio ground while their recent away wins were registered at Avai and Santos (both of whom currently reside in the bottom half of the division). Gremio’s overall away record stands at 2-1-2 6/7 which has vastly improved with the two recent away wins, but they too come up against a tougher opponent in Chapecoense this evening.
Despite Gremio’s five-match winning streak, I believe the hosts Chapecoense can continue their solid form on home turf and at least avoid defeat here. I therefore recommend backing them with the well-priced round ball as they could sneak a 1-0 win tonight.
