Last season’s Premier League champions, Chelsea, have made an indifferent start to their new campaign having won, drawn and lost in equal measure – an opening 2-2 draw at home to Swansea City was followed by a very disappointing 3-0 defeat away at Manchester City.
However, Chelsea picked themselves up and they registered their first Premier League win of the season last weekend when they beat West Brom at The Hawthorns by a 3-2 scoreline. Perhaps uncharacteristically, Chelsea have also been involved in some high-scoring matches so far, and this trend could continue again this afternoon with the visit of a resurgent Crystal Palace.
Chelsea hold an impressive record at Stamford Bridge though, and who would bet against The Blues who are unbeaten on home turf in their last 21 matches, and indeed have won 15 of these 21 overall.
Visitors Crystal Palace head into this afternoon’s clash with London rivals Chelsea having won four of their last five overall in the English top flight, a record which extends into the latter stages of last season.
Crystal Palace have registered wins over Norwich City 3-1 away and last weekend’s 2-1 home win over Aston Villa so far this term, and they may well fancy their chances of upsetting the apple cart at Stamford Bridge today as Alan Pardew’s men continue to defy the critics.
The Eagles have also won four of their last five on their travels as well, but the one defeat during this sequence was a 1-0 loss to today’s opponents Chelsea at the end of last season.
So, despite Crystal Palace’s good start to the new season, I still believe that Chelsea have the necessary quality to see off The Eagles here and could also cover the -1.25 asian line in perhaps a 2-0 win.
