Chelsea to make it another blue day for Mourinho

FA Cup & League Cup Tips

Monday 13th March 2016 Kickoff: 1945hrs Chelsea v Manchester United Football – England – FA Cup The undoubted tie of this round of the FA Cup takes place at Stamford Bridge on Monday evening as Chelsea take on Manchester United. The Blues looks set to regain the league title this season and will be looking to make what would be only their second ever league and cup double with victory in this. One man who will be absolutely desperate to stop them in their tracks is former Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, now in charge of Manchester United. Although he probably would have preferred the game being played at Old Trafford.

Monday’s win at London rivals West Ham extended Chelsea’s uneaten run to 10 games and kept a gap of 10 points between themselves and closest challengers Tottenham. The win against the Hammers was an insight into how Antonio Conte’s men have enjoyed so much success this season by securing a lead through a blistering attacking and holding on to it through excellent organization and a disciplined defence. Conte has managed to stamp his authority on the side in a short space of time and they are beginning to look formidable – much like they did under Mourinho. Chelsea have also shown no let up during the participation in the FA Cup with authoritative wins against Peterborough, Brentford and Wolves – all of home are lower league, of course. The visit of Manchester United certainly represents a step up but it is likely to hold little fear for Conte and his players who dismissed the same opponent 4-0 back in October.

United already have one cup in the bag following an enthralling 3-2 win over Southampton in the EFL cup towards the end of last month. It might not have been the primary target for Mourinho at the season’s outset but it gets the first trophy of his reign secured and he’ll hope that gives the players a taste for it now. The games continue to come thick and fast, however, with participation in the latter stages of the Europa League combined with the quest for a top four spot in the league and an attempt to do a domestic cup double. Like Chelsea, United have faced minimal opposition en route to this stage having seen off three Championship sides in the shape of Reading, Wigan and Blackburn Rovers – although they did get somewhat of a scare against the latter of those. As well as being drawn away to the favourites for the competition, United’s quest as been made even more difficult with the three match ban awarded to Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the first of which he will serve on Monday night. Considering he has been in tremendous form in recent months that represents a huge blow to their chances of winning this game.

It’s rarely every dull when these two clubs meet and this particular game has the makings of being a really interesting encounter. Chelsea have had no European football to contend with this season so there will be no thought given to them resting any players or concentrating on the league. Both competitions have been the focus for them for a number of months now so we can expect as close to a full strength team as possible. It is very much the opposite for Untied and Mourinho who has had to try and rotate when possible considering the number of competitions they have been engaged in. This game comes sandwiched between their last 16 Europa League tie against Rostov so it makes their team selection slightly more difficult to predict. It will also be interesting to see who replaced Ibrahimovic up top.

Liverpool are the only team to have taken anything from Stamford Bridge this season when they won 2-1 back in September. No other opposition team has even managed to draw a game such has been the dominance of the Blues in front of their own fans. The 4-0 success they enjoyed over United never flattered them either and whilst I would be surprised if that is the score line this time around, I fully expect the hosts to progress to book a place at Wembley for next month’s semi-final. It’s almost impossible for all these games not to catch up with United sooner or later and as they will be missing their talisman, I fear it will be another unhappy return for Mourinho.
