A 2-1 defeat away at surprise-package Leicester City was the straw that broke the camel’s back for Chelsea owner Roman Abramovic as the dismissal of the former ‘chosen one’ Jose Mourinho was carried out.
Since then however, Chelsea have embarked upon a five-match unbeaten run under the guidance of caretaker-manager Steve Holland and now baby-sitter Guus Hiddink as The Blues look to continue their steady climb up the table. Recent wins over Sunderland and Crystal Palace in the Premier League along with the third round FA Cup win over Scunthorpe United have seen the squad break out of the Mourinho defensive strangle-hold by scoring 10 goals in these last five matches.
Chelsea’s home record still requires some attention though as their record stands at 4-2-4 15/14 but visitors West Brom have been inconsistent on the road so far this season and this may just be the opportunity that Chelsea need to get their season back on track.
Onto West Brom then, and The Baggies were held to a disappointing 2-2 draw by Championship strugglers Bristol City at The Hawthorns on the weekend, and they now face a much tougher trip to London than they might have done just a few weeks ago!
West Brom have won their last two Premier league matches on the trot with wins over Newcastle United and Stoke City but it needs to be bore in mind that both of these successes were at The Hawthorns while they’ve now gone four matches without a win on their travels.
An away record of 3-3-3 6/8 sums up the west midlands’ club’s inconsistencies with recent defeats at Manchester United and Swansea City preventing them from heading into the top half.
