Next up is a bottom half clash in League One between strugglers Colchester United and Coventry City as both teams look to pull away from the bottom four.
Just two league places separate the hosts Colchester and today’s visitors Coventry City who are both on 17 points and Colchester will be keen to stop their recent back-to-back league defeats to Port Vale and Barnsley from developing into anything more serious.
The U’s had previously put together a run of four matches without defeat as they beat Fleetwood Town and Chesterfield along with gaining points off Scunthorpe United and Swindon Town in draws, but the two recent defeats have plunged the Essex outfit back into dangerous territory. Their home record stands at a below-par 2-2-4 10/13 and their last five has been split by two wins, two defeats and a draw.
Coventry City haven’t fared much better in recent weeks as they’ve registered just one league win from their last ten matches, that being a 3-2 win at home over Peterborough United who are renowned for slipping up against the bottom half teams in League One.
Recent defeats against Bristol City, Oldham Athletic and Notts County have been tough fixtures for the Sky Blues as the aforementioned clubs are all in the top half of the division, but I sense that Coventry have a chance of getting something at Colchester today particularly given their recent point at Leyton Orient in a 2-2 draw.
However, a draw may be the best that Coventry can hope for as their away results this season have been less than acceptable with an away record of 0-3-5 8/15, and just one win from their last 17 away matches.
With a side that are inconsistent at home playing a side that just cannot win on the road, I believe this match may well be heading towards a stalemate – I’ll back the draw here in what could be a 1-1 or 2-2 draw.
