The Danish domestic season reaches its climax on Thursday afternoon when the top two teams in the Danish top flight, Copenhagen and Brondby, face off in the DBU Polkalfinale at the Telia Parken, which happens to be Copenhagen’s home ground.
Copenhagen once again ran away with the Danish Superliga title by a 12-point margin over this afternoon’s opponents, Brondby, who finished runners-up and even though there is one match remaining in the Championship Round, Copenhagen hold a massive 19 point lead over them and will duly take their place in the Champions League qualifiers at the start of next season.
Copenhagen come into this match on the back of two consecutive defeats to Midtjylland and Lyngby, but they recorded a 2-0 win away at Vendsyssel in the DBU Cup semi-final to take their place in the final. Watch out for strikers Cornelius (12 goals) and Santander (11 goals) for the hosts as potential anytime goalscorers here.
Brondby finished runners-up to their hosts, Copenhagen, in the Danish Superliga and they face the Danish champions again in the DBU Pokal final as they look to cause what would be considered an upset if they lift the cup from under the host’s noses on Thursday afternoon.
Brondby could be forgiven if they’re getting sick of the sight of Copenhagen this season as they’ve ended up on the losing side in both the home and away encounters in the Superliga this term, losing 1-0 in both fixtures.
But if Copenhagen were in indifferent form ahead of this cup clash having suffered two consecutive defeats, then Brondby are positively showing relegation form ahead of this cup final having suffered four defeats on the trot in the league.
The form book is often thrown out the window in cup clashes, and especially in the final, but I believe Copenhagen just possess too much quality to lose here.
