Corinthians dropped down to fourth place in the Brazilian Serie A following last weekend’s 2-0 loss away at Atletico PR, but they have a great chance of bouncing straight back with a win tonight when they play host to second from bottom club Cruzeiro.
Last weekend’s defeat ended an unbeaten run of seven league matches, but with a solid home record behind them at their Arena Corinthians where they’re yet to taste defeat, the home side look like they’re in the driving seat ahead of tonight’s clash.
Corinthians’ home record stands at 6-3-0 17/5 so far this season, but they’re home record is an excellent one as they are actually unbeaten in their last 26 league matches on home soil; this includes a 3-0 home win in their last meeting at home with tonight’s opponents Cruzeiro.
Onto Cruzeiro now, and a recent 4-2 home win over Internacional during the week ended a run of six Serie A matches without a win, but there’s still a lot of work for the visitors to do if they’re to pull themselves out of their current relegation position.
Cruzeiro are second from bottom in the division but they have been able to spring a few surprises away from home so far this season as they’ve beaten the likes of Botafogo, Atletico Mineiro and Ponte Preta within their overall away record of 3-0-6 11/16.
However, just two clean sheets so far on their travels could once again be their undoing tonight, and although they’re expected to make life difficult for the hosts, I fancy Corinthians to edge this one to take the maximum haul.
