Corinthians extended their unbeaten run in the Brazilian top flight to seven matches with a point earned away at Coritiba in a 1-1 draw, and they now look forward to home advantage at their Arena Corinthians ground to welcome visitors Vasco da Gama.
This solid run of form has seen Corinthians move up into second place in Serie A just one league position and two points adrift of league leaders Atletico Mineiro, and with third from bottom Vasco visiting tonight, the hosts could be forgiven for eyeing off what seems an almost certain three points here this evening.
Corinthians hold a good home record of 6-0-1 10/4 having won their last five on the trot on home soil with wins over Internacional, Figueirense, Ponte Preta, Atletico PR and the aforementioned league leaders Atletico Mineiro.
Vasco da Gama, by contrast, have struggled in Serie A for most of the season as they find themselves third from bottom thanks to another crushing defeat at the weekend; a heavy 4-1 home loss to Palmeiras will have done their already fragile confidence no good at all, and they face a tough task of getting anything at Corinthians tonight.
Four defeats from their last five matches is enough to dent any team’s confidence, and despite a 2-1 win last time out on their travels at Figueirense, their overall away record stands at a poor 1-1-5 3/11 with goals coming at a premium on the road.
Just three goals on their travels tells its own story and not only have they failed to score on five occasions already this term, but they’ve won just once in their last 17 away matches which doesn’t bode well for the visitors tonight.
I’ll therefore back the hosts Corinthians to take the points tonight and cover the -1 asian handicap too in what could perhaps be a 2-0 win for the home side.
