Group D concludes at the end of Tuesday night and my first pick features the top two sides of the group when they clash at the Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux in Bordeaux in a winner takes all encounter.
Croatia took all three points in their 1-0 win over Turkey in the opening group match which was a bruising encounter, but could only manage a point against Czech Republic in an entertaining 2-2 draw – but the most important factor is that they’re unbeaten and they possess four points to date.
Even if Croatia lose to Spain, four points could be enough to see them through to the last 16, courtesy of being one of the best third placed teams (worst case scenario), but with players like Mandzukic up front and the mercurial Modric in midfield, they present their own threats in attack.
Spain currently sit top of the group on six points after having beaten Czech Republic 1-0 and Turkey 3-0 as they’ve already booked their place into the knock-out stages even before they kick-off against Croatia on Tuesday night.
There will have been a fair amount of relief in the Spanish camp that they’ve managed to negotiate their first two group matches in the Euro 2016 finals following their disastrous World Cup campaign a couple of years ago which saw them fail to emerge from the group stages.
But Spain seem to have re-found their ‘mojo’ and they’ve lost just once in their last 14 matches overall, and the goals have started to flow again in recent times as they’ve scored 13 goals in their last five matches in all competition.
With both teams in pretty good form, I reckon we could see them both score here tonight.
