Atletico keen to hold onto automatic CL spot

Football – Spain – La Liga

Saturday 18th April 2015 – Kickoff: 1800hrs

Even though Deportivo La Coruna earned a valuable point away from home on Sunday night at Real Sociedad in a 2-2 draw, they still remain firmly ensconced in the relegation battle that is being fought at the foot of the Spanish top flight.

Deportivo are now level on points with third from bottom club Levante, so they are not out of the woods yet, and indeed, have a tough match ahead of them tonight with the visit of Atletico Madrid. Deportivo’s cause hasn’t been helped either by a run of eight matches without a win which has left them fifth from bottom.

Their home record stands at  4-5-7  18/27 and they’ve registered just one home win from their last seven matches on home turf which was a 2-0 win over Eibar back in early February, but they’ve lost five of their eight matches so far against top half opposition.

Atletico Madrid go into tonight’s match on the back of a 2-2 draw away at Malaga last weekend, and they face another away trip tonight at Deportivo. Atletico are currently third in La Liga but they only hold a slender one point lead over fourth placed Valencia who closed the gap following a 3-0 win over Levante.

The visitors are unbeaten in their last eight matches overall, while their away record stands at  7-4-4  20/15 with just one defeat from their last six matches. They are also very capable of keeping a clean sheet on their travels too as they’ve achieved shut-outs in three of their last four away from home.

Striker Griezmann (18 goals) is their danger man up front, and with goalscoring midfielders Tiago and Saul in support, they’ll be very difficult to stop in the final third.

Atletico Madrid have the incentive of needing to keep hold of their automatic Champions League spot, and with the greater attacking quality they possess, I’ll back them for perhaps a 1-0 win here this evening.
