Following a strong run of seven matches without defeat, Borussia Dortmund will be forgiven for harbouring ambitions of handing out a second defeat on the trot to tonight’s visitors Bayern Munich when the two teams clash on Saturday evening.
Recent wins over Freiburg, Mainz, Stuttgart, Schalke and Hannover have given them a welcome boost as well as useful points against Hamburg and Cologne, although this evening will be their toughest test yet in recent weeks.
Dortmund have been pretty steady though at home in the past couple of months having lost just once in their last seven matches on home turf (a 1-0 loss to Augsburg), but an overall record of 5-3-4 16/12 is about par for a mid-table side at this stage.
Bayern Munich received a jolt to bring them back down to earth last time out when they lost 2-0 at home to Borussia Moenchengladbach which served as a stark reminder that any side can beat anyone, even the mighty Bayern!
Bayern Munich had previously chalked up six straight wins on the trot in the Bundesliga with wins over Stuttgart, Hamburg, Paderborn, Cologne, Hannover and Werder Bremen as they surged ahead of the rest of the pack at the top of the division.
They still hold a ten-point lead over second placed Wolfsburg, and their away form has also been strong in recent weeks as they’ve registered four away wins on the trot. Their overall away record stands at 9-3-1 30/7 and they’ve also kept nine clean sheets on their travels so far this season too which could come into play again this evening.
That recent shock defeat, even though it was against a third placed side, will have hopefully given Bayern Munich the kick up the backside they probably needed to bring them back into focus mode – we should see a response this evening from the visitors who could edge this perhaps 2-1, but i recommend giving the quarter ball in case.
