It’s the start of the quarter-finals in the Europa League and I have a couple of picks for the first legs, starting with Dortmund when they play host to Liverpool at their Signal-Iduna-Park with the hosts looking to take a lead over to Anfield next week.
Dortmund have won their last five matches on the trot in all competitions including a two-legged win over Tottenham in the previous round as they ran out comfortable 5-1 winners on aggregate. In addition, Dortmund have now gone an amazing 20 matches without defeat in all matches, so they certainly seem to have momentum behind them here.
In the Europa League, Dortmund have won their last four with earlier wins over Porto (home and away), while their home form has seen them win 7 of their last 9 on home turf. Strikers Aubameyang and Reus are the danger men up front for the hosts.
Visitors Liverpool are without a win from their last three, having drawn with Manchester United in the Europa League and a 1-1 draw at home to Tottenham in the Premier League, while also tasting defeat to Southampton at St Marys Stadium.
Manager Jurgen Klopp returns to his former club where he achieved back-to-back German Bundesliga titles back in 2010 and 2011, but his Liverpool side are not in the same class as Klopp’s former Dortmund side (nor, perhaps the current one!)
The Reds are unbeaten in their last 10 Europa League matches overall, and they’ve drawn four of their last five away from home in this competition. They’ll do well to sneak another draw here tonight I feel.
