Although Borussia Dortmund played second fiddle to German Bundesliga title winners Bayern Munich for most of the season last term, tonight’s hosts can feel pleased with how their season went and they hold home advantage in the opening day of the new season here this afternoon.
The venue is Signal-Iduna-Park as Dortmund prepare for the visit of Mainz, and having registered three wins in the trot recently in friendlies against Sandhauser and Hallescher along with a DFB Cup win over Eintracht Trier, they’ll no doubt be confident of extending this form into today’s season-opener.
In addition, Dortmund were the only side in the whole of the Bundesliga that remained unbeaten throughout last season at home, finishing up with an impressive record of 14-3-0 49/14 which included a 2-0 win over today’s opponents Mainz back in mid-March.
Onto Mainz then, and they finished in sixth spot in the German top flight which was largely thanks to their home form where they won 8 of their 17 matches, but they’ll need to improve upon their away results this season if they’re to go a step better this time around.
Mainz finished with a record of 6-4-7 23/24 on their travels and overall, they ended the season with just one win from their last six matches. Away from home they ended a dismal run of four matches without success with a last away match win at Stuttgart in a 3-1 victory.
You’d have to think that Borussia Dortmund would be occupying a top half position this season as well, and Mainz’s record away from home at top half opposition ended up on a rather inconsistent looking 3-2-3 12/12.
