History was made last night as Spain won their third successive tournament after turning in a marvellous performance to defeat Italy 4-0 in the final of the Euro 2012 to retain their crown as the best in Europe. After so much criticism for being ‘boring’ and ‘defensive’, Vincent Del Bosque’s men proved to everyone why they are the best. Goals from David Silva, Jordi Alba, Fernando Torres and Juan Mata rounded off what had been a masterclass in technique, organisation and game management. Yes there were time when they lacked a bit of urgency but opposition teams tried everything to unsettle them and get them out their rhythm. Portugal came closest to achieving it by taking them to penalties but even then, Spain were deserved winners.
Sympathy must go to Italy and their coach Cesare Prandelli as they captured the hearts of many with their style of play and attitude to the tournament. It is likely that Andrea Pirlo has played in his last major tournament for his country which is sad as he really shone over the last month, proving how fantastic a player he really is. The likes of De Rossi, Marchisio and Balotelli will come again and are the foundations of a bright future for Italian football – there time will come.
Overall it was a thoroughly enjoying European Championships. The football, in the main, was excellent; we didn’t have to contend with endless antics of play-acting and the host countries were excellent. There were unfortunately several unsavoury incidents with fans of certain countries but it’s been most enjoyable and one which ended with history being made.
From a betting perspective it’s been profitable and the tips flagged up in these previews have served us well. As the tournament wore on form began to pay dividend and it was easier to get a read on certain players and teams, and how they would approach matches.
We finished with a level stakes profit of 17.75 for every pound stakes. So, for example, if you allocated £10 for every 1pt bet, you
would have been up £177.50 today. For betting in every match it’s a very sound return and one I’m pleased with. Unfortunately, last night’s tip was unsuccessful as Spain scoring early meant that there was little need to pin Italy back for long periods, choosing instead to hit them on the counter.
