A 3-2 defeat away at Watford on the weekend resulted in Everton dropping down to 9th place in the English top flight and this became Everton’s fifth league game without a win ahead of their Tuesday night clash with second placed Arsenal.
Recent defeats to Chelsea, Southampton and Watford (albeit away from home) has dented The Toffees’ confidence and although they still remain unbeaten at Goodison Park so far in this campaign, they’re expected to be facing a tough and comprehensive examination against Arsenal here.
Everton’s home record stands at 3-4-0 10/5 to date although they’ve played a top half team at home just once so far this season which ended in a 1-1 draw with Tottenham. It will therefore be interesting to see how they fare against an in-form Arsenal outfit tonight.
Onto Arsenal then, and The Gunners registered a relatively easy 3-1 home win over Stoke City to hand them their third Premier League win on the trot and extended their unbeaten run to 14 matches ahead of their trip to Merseyside this evening.
Recent wins over Bournemouth, West Ham and the aforementioned Stoke City have placed Arsenal amongst one of the early title contenders again this season, but it’s games like Everton away from home where we’ll see if they are genuine contenders under Arsene Wenger.
An away record of 5-2-0 18/5 shows early promise though, and a win this evening could see Arsenal move top of the league at the expense of their London rivals Chelsea.
