Premier League football returns after the international break and my first pick features 9th placed Everton as they look to build upon their recent 6-2 mauling of Sunderland and the hard-earned point gained away at West Ham before the break.
Back-to-back defeats to Manchester United and Arsenal were perhaps inevitable I guess, but Roberto Martinez’s side know they need to take all three points against an Aston Villa outfit who are totally bereft of confidence ahead of today’s clash.
Everton’s home record stands at a surprisingly mediocre 2-2-2 12/11 but they’ve also beaten Chelsea at Goodison Park and taken a point against Watford and merseyside rivals Liverpool. Everton forwards Lukaku, Kone and Naismith are the ones to consider for anytime goalscorer today.
Visitors Aston Villa remain rock-bottom of the Premier League despite holding Manchester City to a point at Villa Park prior to the international break, and find themselves five points adrift of Newcastle United who sit just above the bottom three.
Curiously, Aston Villa’s only winning the top flight this season so far was an opening-day 1-0 win at Bournemouth which might just turn out to be a vital victory as the season goes on. Villa’s overall away form since then has nose-dived in dramatic fashion as they’ve lost their subsequent five matches on the trot.
The midlanders’ away record stands at a poor 1-0-5 7/13 as they’ve crashed to defeats at Crystal Palace, Leicester City, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham and they’ve kept just three clean sheets from their last 17 away matches at this level!
Given Aston Villa’s poor defensive record on their travels, I see a straight win for the hosts here as the safest bet.
