FLEETWOOD v CHESTERFIELD – Pick: 1 AH0 – 23 August 2014

Cod Army to reel in Spireites

League One/Two Tips

Football – England – League One

Saturday 23rd August 2014 – Kickoff: 1500hrs

An early top of the league clash is next up with League One leaders Fleetwood Town taking on sixth placed Chesterfield at their Highbury Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Fleetwood’s rise in the English football league has been nothing short of meteoric and with a quick succession of promotions from the Conference North, to the Conference Premier, a couple of seasons in League Two, then promotion at the end of last season via a play-off final win over Burton Albion at Wembley, The Cod Army now find themselves top of League One!

It’s still early days of course, but the gamble of bringing in a raft of experienced lower league players who had previously played at a higher level has, so far, paid off. Three straight league wins anyway says it has with victories over Crewe Alexandra 2-1 at home, with 1-0 and 2-0 wins away at Notts County and Scunthorpe United respectively.

Players to look out for are Evans and Proctor up front with midfielders Schumacher and Sarcevic – the latter scored the winning goal at Wembley to give Fleetwood promotion to League One.

Visitors Chesterfield scored a great opening day win away at Leyton Orient winning 2-1 at the Matchroom Stadium which was then followed up with a 2-1 home win over Rochdale. They did lose in the first round of the League Cup but that was to Championship side Huddersfield Town and in extra-time as well.

However, The Spireites suffered a 0-1 defeat at home to MK Dons on Tuesday night and they now face a tough trip to a buoyant Fleetwood Town side who are very used to that winning feeling.

Midfielders Roberts and Boco are the life source of Chesterfield’s attacking momentum and they feed striker Doyle up front who has bagged 3 goals so far this season.

But my vote for this fixture goes to the hosts Fleetwood Town who are unbeaten in their last eleven home matches in all competitions, but I do recommend taking the round ball in case it ends up a draw. Fleetwood might nick this perhaps 1-0.
