FULHAM v WOLVES – Pick: X – 20 August 2014

Cottagers and Wolves look to avoid further defeats

Football – England – Championship

Craven Cottage is the venue of Wednesday night’s sole Championship match as hosts Fulham look to kick-start their new season in England’s second tier.

Fulham have lost both of their opening two matches in the Championship with defeats away at Ipswich Town 1-2 and Saturday’s surprise home loss to Millwall 0-1 which was not the start that The Cottagers, or Felix Magath, were expecting in their bid to attempt an immediate return to the top flight.

Fulham announced their intentions of doing just that with the big-money signing of Leeds United striker Ross McCormack to boost their attacking personnel, but I’m still wondering why a Premiership club didn’t make a bid for McCormack after turning in so many consistent performances.

Disciplinarian Magath now has to re-group his squad for tonight’s match with Wolves, and a third successive league defeat I suspect won’t be tolerated.

Onto Wolves then, and after a promising start to their new campaign back in the Championship following an opening day 1-0 home win over relegated Norwich City at Molineux, they’ve since switched off with a 2-3 home loss to League Two side Northampton Town in the first round of the League Cup.

This was then followed up with a 0-1 away defeat at fellow promoted side from League One, Rotherham United and manager Kenny Jackett will also be very keen for his side to avoid another defeat in London tonight.

It’s no secret that Kenny Jackett has rebuilt his squad around the nucleus of the new signings and younger players that secured them promotion from League One last term which means that the hefty earners from Wolves’s Premiership days such as midfielder O’Hara and striker Doyle are likely to be left out in the cold again for tonight’s clash.

Both teams go into tonight’s fixture on the back of some indifferent and unexpected results, so I fancy neither team will want to come out of this match with another defeat. This leads me to backing the draw then for this clash as I suspect both Fulham and Wolves would settle for a point tonight. Could be a 1-1 draw.
