Group A resumes on Wednesday evening in the Africa Cup of Nations and we still aren’t any the wiser in terms of how the group will pan out as both opening fixtures of this group ended in stalemates.
Gabon drew their opening match with Guinea-Bissau 1-1 and this has been the general theme of their recent results as they had been involved in three draws prior to this tournament having drawn with Morocco 0-0 and Mali 0-0 in World Cup qualifiers, along with a 1-1 draw with Comoros in a friendly international.
Gabon can of course draw upon their attacking star Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang from Borussia Dortmund who scored in Gabon’s opening group match against Guinea-Bissau, and is once again their main threat up front this evening.
Burkina Faso also drew their opening match in Group A with a 1-1 draw with Cameroon and they’ve actually managed to secure just one win from their last five matches overall, which was a 2-0 win away at Cape Verde Islands in a World Cup qualifier back in November.
A 1-1 draw at home with South Africa in the World Cup qualifiers along with defeats at Morocco 1-0 and Mali 2-1 (both in international friendlies) perhaps suggest that they could be among the also-rans in this group rather than posing any real threats to pre-tournament favourites Gabon and Cameroon to emerge from this group.
It’s also worth noting that Gabon have won two of the last three meetings between these two sides with 2-0 wins which were both recorded in the Africa Cup of Nations, the other was a 1-1 draw.
