Germany cruised during the group stages in Group C as they topped the group by a diference of one goal ahead of second placed Poland, but in truth, neither nation were really pushed by the also-rans Northern Ireland and Ukraine.
Germany had a game plan that all they needed to do was to beat Ukraine and Northern Ireland and avoid defeat to Poland and they would be through to the last 16, and that was exactly how it panned out for the current World Cup holders as they secured wins over Ukraine 2-0 and Northern Ireland 1-0 along with sharing the points with Poland in a 0-0 draw.
They now take their place in the last 16 and face a hard-working and well organised Slovakia, but they should have superior cutting edge up front with the likes of Muller and Gomez as well as the creative midfield consisting of Ozil, Kroos and Khedira.
Onto Slovakia, and they emerged from Group B as one of the best third placed teams during the group stages as they finished on 4 points in a group that also included England and Wales, having beaten Russia 2-1 and holding England to a well deserved 0-0 draw.
The Slovaks have lost just once in their last 11 matches overall which was the Group B defeat to Wales, so they will be confident of a good showing this evening, but in reality they will probably have to score at least 2 goals if they’re to beat the Germans tonight.
Germany have kept four clean sheets on the trot now overall, and although Slovakia beat Germany 3-1 in a recent friendly back in May, it’s now tournament time and I’m expecting the Germans to move up through the gears now.
