GILLINGHAM v CREWE – Pick: 1 – 30 August 2014

Gills to maintain home form when Crewe visit

League One/Two Tips

Football – England – League One

Saturday 30th August 2014 – Kickoff: 1500hrs

Peter Taylor’s Gillingham narrowly lost to Premier League club Newcastle United in the second round of the League Cup in midweek but it was a spirited performance nonetheless from the League One side.

Newcastle took virtually their strongest squad so Gillingham will have gained heart from their performance despite losing out in the end. They now look to bounce back from their last League One match which ended in defeat away at Barnsley in a heavy 1-4 loss as they entertain bottom club Crewe Alexandra at their Priestfield Stadium.

It’s been a case of steady as she goes for The Gills at home so far in the league with a 2-0 home win over Yeovil Town and a 2-2 draw with Swindon Town, with striker Danny Kedwell hitting 4 goals so far this campaign and he looks a likely candidate for an anytime goalscorer option here.

Onto Crewe Alexandra, and as mentioned, they find themselves bottom of League One after the first four matches of the season. Of course, it’s early days but four straight defeats to start the season is not what the players or the fans were expecting.

The Railwaymen started brightly enough with a 2-0 win away at Barnsley in the first round of the Capital One Cup but defeats in the league away at Fleetwood Town and Swindon Town along with home losses to Barnsley and a 2-5 loss to Rochdale means that Steven Davis’s side are still without a single point in the first few weeks of the season.

The primary concerns at the moment are the number of goals Crewe have conceded so far (11 in total in the league), and with the likes of a hungry Kedwell in the Gillingham ranks, this could be a long afternoon for the visitors.

Gillingham know they stand a good chance of maintaining their unbeaten start to the season at Priestfield against Crewe today and I’ll back them to bag the three points here in perhaps a 2-1 win for the hosts.
