With a mini break in the Euro 2016 finals, I turn my attention to the Brazilian domestic Serie A with hosts and third placed Gremio taking on struggling Vitoria at their Arena do Grêmio ground as they look to consolidate their Copa Libertadores spot.
Gremio have enjoyed a successful start to their Serie A campaign having suffered just one defeat in their first nine league matches, while they still hold a 100% record on home turf with a record of 4-0-0 6/0 which includes wins against Flamengo, Coritiba, Ponte Preta and Cruzeiro.
In addition, Gremio have kept clean sheets in each of these four home matches with their main contributor so far being from attacking midfielder Luan with 5 goals. Incidentally, Gremio have won their last seven home matches on the trot.
Visitors Vitoria currently sit in a lowly 15th place in the Brazilian Serie A following back-to-back defeats to Sao Paulo and Chapecoense, and their fans have voiced their displeasure recently at the training ground as they see their team languishing in the bottom half of the division.
With just one win from their last seven matches overall, confidence must be fragile to say the least, while their away form has been even worse having gone seven matches on the road without a win – indeed their last win on their travels was a 1-0 win away at Chapecoense in their last stint in the Brazilian top flight back in 2014.
Vitoria’s away record stands at 0-2-3 3/9 with only Atletico PR and America conceding more goals than them away from home in the division.
Simply put, Gremio should win this comfortably, and I’ll also back them to cover the asian line too.
