Wednesday night brings us the first of the Spanish Segunda Division play-off semi-finals with hosts, Huesca, taking on Getafe at their Estadio El Alcoraz, as the home side look to continue their impressive home form.
But it was actually a 2-1 win away at already promoted Levante on the final day of the season which clinched Huesca a top six finish and a play-off berth at the expense of Real Valladolid who missed out on goal difference, despite beating fifth placed Cadiz 1-0 at home.
Huesca dramatically turned things around on home turf in the second half of the season following a patchy period from late November to early February which saw them lose four of their five home matches during that period. But they finished the season in strong fashion, putting together a nine-match unbeaten run.
Visitors Getafe narrowly missed out on automatic promotion on the final stages of the regular season which ended up with them drawing 3-3 away at relegated Mallorca, while second placed Girona suffered a 2-1 loss at mid-table Cordoba.
However, Getafe would still have missed out on goal difference even if they’d claimed a win on the final day, and so they will make their way to Huesca for the first leg of the play-off semi-finals on Tuesday night with a slightly out of sorts away record under their belts.
An away record of 5-7-9 21/30 doesn’t fill me with much confidence as this includes just two wins on the road from their last 11, although they did hold Huesca to a 0-0 draw earlier in the season when the teams last met at Estadio El Alcoraz back in early April.
Huesca look the more likely to gain a first leg advantage, but I’m expecting a tight opening encounter here.
