Hungary will head into their last Group F match against Portugal in a confident frame of mind having made a solid start to their Euro 2016 campaign, and they probably only need a draw in tonight’s encounter to progress through to the next stage of the tournament.
Hungary secured a valuable three points in their opening game with a slightly unexpected 2-0 win over Austria which was followed with a 1-1 draw against a hard-working Iceland outfit, and they now sit top of the group unbeaten with one game remaining of the group stages.
Forwards Szalai and Priskin have looked lively up front, while Gera has pulled the strings in midfield, while the presence of Stieber, Dzsudzsak and Kleinheisler will make life difficult for Portugal tonight.
Portugal failed to make their domination count against Austria as they ended up empty-handed again in a 0-0 draw on the back of their opening group match against Iceland which ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Despite having countless goalscoring opportunities (including a missed penalty), Cristiano Ronaldo failed to score all night, and they are in danger of being tagged ‘if Ronaldo doesn’t score, Portugal don’t score’, and they are fast becoming an over-rated quantity in international football.
Even if Portugal click into gear tonight, it’s hard to see them absolutely trashing an in-form Hungary this evening, and they are also likely to be without the services of Geurreiro and Gomes who both missed training due to injuries.
I reckon Hungary have enough to avoid a big defeat here, and they might even nick the points.
