Italy secured what could be a vital win in their opening Group E against pre-tournament group favourites Belgium in an important 2-0 win which now places the Italians in the box-seat for a place in the knock-out stages of the Euro 2016 finals.
Italy have been in indifferent form leading up to the European Championships, but you can never rule them out as they just seem to click into gear when it comes to major tournaments, finding a way to win.
Belgium did manage to carve out a few opportunities in front of goal with particularly Origi guilty of missing a couple of glaring opportunities, but once ahead, as we know, Italy are a very hard unit to break down. Sweden were held to a 1-1 draw by a spirited Republic of Ireland side on Monday night and this draw meant that Sweden are now unbeaten in their last four matches in all competitions having previously recorded a 3-0 win against Wales along with stalemates with Czech Republic, Slovenia and the aforementioned Republic of Ireland.
Sweden had to go through the play-offs to reach the Euro 2016 finals and I do wonder whether they have the depth of squad to really compete alongside the super powers of Europe such as Germany, Spain, Italy and France.
We all know what Ibrahimovic is capable of but he’ll be very closely marked in this afternoon’s clash, so Sweden may need to employ a Plan B if they’re to get anything from this match – do they possess the creative spark to do so?
