It’s been five years since Northern Ireland outfit, Linfield, made it through to the Champions League qualifiers, but they secured their berth to this competition via an impressive run of form in the Championship Round of the Irish Premier Division at the end of last season.
Linfield were in second place and four points behind Crusaders at the end of the regular season as they headed into the second phase of the domestic season, but a run of five straight wins on the trot, which included a 1-0 home win over Crusaders, sealed their spot. The hosts also racked up the double with an Irish Cup win over Coleraine.
Although Linfield have failed to win any of their last nine at home in the Champions League, they’ve drawn their last four at Windsor Park against opposition including the likes of Rosenborg and BATE Borisov.
Visitors La Fiorita confirmed their place in the Champions League qualifiers following a lengthy and protracted domestic campaign in the San Marino Campionato, which ultimately saw them register an extra-time 6th round play-off win over Tre Penne.
It certainly wasn’t plain sailing throughout the play-off phase for La Fiorita though as they also had to go into extra-time against Folgore in the play-off fourth round, so they may well find things tough going when they travel over to Northern Ireland this evening.
La Fiorita last appeared in the Champions League qualifiers three years ago when they made their debut in the competition, but it ended in disaster as they were trashed 8-0 on aggregate by Estonian side, Levadia, which included a heavy 7-0 loss in the away leg.
