Liverpool commenced their new Premier League campaign with an impressive win away at Stoke City winning 1-0 to start on a high note.
Liverpool were involved in a very high-profile transfer during the summer when striker Raheem Sterling was sold to Manchester City, but despite the loss of Sterling, this may well be a great bit of business done by Rodgers as Sterling’s value is nowhere near that value, while the Reds have cashed in with the arrival of Brazilian striker Firmino and former Aston Villa marksman Christian Benteke filling the void.
Anfield legend Steve Gerrard also departed to American outfit LA Galaxy but again, James Milner has stepped in along with the exciting prospect Jordan Ibe who is being groomed as perhaps the next Sterling.
Visitors Bournemouth were dealt a major blow on the opening day of the Premier League season when they lost 1-0 at home to Aston Villa in this their inaugural season in the English top flight.
The defeat to the midlands club is not a good sign however for Eddie Howe’s men as they lost to a Villa outfit who had previously registered just two away wins on the road despite the overall resurrection under manager Tim Sherwood.
The Cherries now make the long trip up north to Anfield where they’ll be subject to a noisy, partisan crowd particularly in the Kop end, and it could be a baptism of fire for the south coast club. It’ll certainly be interesting to see how they cope tonight, as they’ll be desperate to avoid two opening defeats at the start of the new season.
Liverpool should have enough quality to see off Bournemouth here despite the team spirit that Howe has ignited with his Cherries squad, and I’ll also back The Reds to cover the -1 asian line here too in what could be a 2-0 win for the home side.
