Liverpool v Chelsea
Football – Premier League – England

Neither Liverpool or Chelsea are going to finish in a position they would have been aiming for at the beginning of the season but there’s no doubting that it’s the home side who come into this game in much better mood as the end of the 2015/16 campaign approaches. Whenever these two meet it often throws up a story or two and despite there being very little at stake for either club, it remains an intriguing prospect as two of England’s biggest clash at Anfield.

Jurgen Klopp has been in charge of Liverpool for around seven months and it’s gone as well as anybody could realistically have anticipated. The Reds have steadily climbed the table after a pretty indifferent first couple of months, but the majority of their success has came in Europe where they have been particularly impressive in reaching the final of the Europa League. With a place in next season’s Champions League awaiting the winner, next Wednesday’s clash with Sevilla – who have won the competition in the previous two seasons – is most certainly the priority but Klopp will be aiming to finish their home season on a high with a win over last year’s champions. Despite making eight changes at the weekend in their game with Watford, Liverpool were still extremely comfortable winners, running out 2-0 victors. It’s expected that Klopp will play a stronger team against Chelsea with a view to resting them again in the final game of the season on Sunday.

Chelsea continue to be involved in some excellent games for the neutrals following their 3-2 loss away to Sunderland on Saturday coming so soon on the back of the much-talked about draw with Tottenham five days previous. It’s apparent that the Blues are quite happy to finish the season by playing a much more expansive style of football than they would ordinarily do so. They finish their season at home to champions Leicester on Sunday so the last month or so will have certainly given their supporters value for money in terms of entertainment. We can certainly expect the Chelsea team who takes the field under Antonio Conte on the opening day of next season to be very different in both personnel and style, but it seems as though Guus Hiddink is keen to allow the current squad to express themselves which is hardly surprising considering the criticism that certain players have received this term and the fact that they only have pride to play for considering they can finish no higher than ninth.

One thing that Klopp set out to do at the start of his reign was to make Anfield something of a fortress. He has made a point of uniting the supporters and the players at every possible opportunity and it appears to be reaping dividends. The last time a visiting team won was Stoke City back in January – in their 12 home games since Liverpool have won eight and drawn four. Their form in the Premier League has been particularly impressive with Crystal Palace and Manchester United the only two teams to have won at Anfield since Klopp arrived. It may not mean much in final league placings (although Liverpool can still finish as high as fifth) but what it does do is give them a platform to build on for the new season. If they can finish their home season off with another win on Wednesday it will be a further sign that Liverpool could well be involved in the title shake-up next season.

For all that Chelsea’s fans will have been entertained recently, it’s now just one win in five for Hiddink’s men. The club are on course for their lowest finish since the 1995/96 season and in that 20 years so much has changed. The millions of Roman Abramovich has completely transformed the club in the last 13 years and this season will certainly have been a massive disappointment for the owner who strives for success in everything he does. The last time he appointed an Italian manager proved to be very successful, of course, when Carlo Ancelotti arrived at Stamford Bridge with a bang as he led the club to a domestic double – the first time ever Chelsea have achieved this. The Russian billionaire will be hoping for something similar with the acquisition of Conte.

When you look back on some recent meetings between these two there has been more than a few talking points. From the infamous Luis Garcia’s ‘non-goal’ in a Champions League semi-final a little over a decade ago, to Chelsea infamously ruining Liverpool’s title challenge from two seasons ago when Steven Gerrard memorably gifted the ball to Demba Ba via that slip. It’s unlikely that anything which happens tomorrow is going to be remembered as much as those games but I think we could be in for an enjoyable 90 minutes nonetheless. Liverpool are looking to do the double over the Blues having won so impressively at Stamford Bridge back in October – running out 3-1 winners. That is a feat they have not achieved since 2011/12 so it’s certainly some sort of motivation for them.

This is a fixture that has produced a few goals in recent meetings with a total of 37 goals shared in the last 14 games. Over 2.5 goals is tempting considering five of Liverpool’s last seven home games in the league have had three or more whilst five of Chelsea’s last six the same. The selection, however, is for both teams to score. It’s a bet that would have won in 10 of the last 14 meetings and with neither team under any pressure for results, there should be plenty of chances on both sides. It may not be the biggest of prices but I think it’s a rock-solid bet.
