It’s back to Group C where we have the joint leaders of the group facing off this evening at the OPEL ARENA in Mainz, Germany with the hosts looking to take a lead over their opponents Anderlecht in this important group fixture on Matchday 3.
German club Mainz were held to a 1-1 draw by Saint Etienne on the opening day, but they then followed that up with a 3-2 away win at Qabala to hand them the joint lead in Group C. The hosts hold a pretty steady record at home in the Europa League as they’ve been beaten just once in their six matches on home turf, which was a 2-0 loss to Spanish side Sevilla.
A domestic 2-1 home win over Darmstadt in the German Bundesliga at the weekend will also have given the home side a boost ahead of tonight’s match as they look to take a clear lead in the group.
Onto Anderlecht then, and the Belgian side head into this Group C clash on the back of a four-match run without defeat as they’ve registered wins over Slavia Prague 6-0 on aggregate (3-0 at home and 3-0 away), while also securing all three points with a 3-1 home win over Qabala and a 1-1 draw away at Saint Etienne.
But just three away wins from their last nine on their travels in this competition leads me to think that they might struggle in Germany this evening as they’ve kept just two clean sheets during this sequence, and Mainz will be looking to make the most of their home advantage here.
