The other match to start Group D off is a clash between Mali and Egypt on Tuesday night at the Stade de Port-Gentil after the Ghana/Uganda encounter, with Egypt being the other team tipped to emerge from this group to join Ghana into the knock-out stages of thus competition.
Mali have produced some mixed results ahead of this year’s Africa Cup of Nations as they progressed through the qualifying stages to reach the finals of the ACO, but on the World Cup qualifying front, they failed to win their last two matches as they fell to a 3-1 defeat away at Ivory Coast and were held to a 0-0 draw at home by Gabon.
Mali reached the final stages of the Africa Cup of Nations in 2015 but failed to progress from the group stages as three draws weren’t enough to see them through with group winners Ivory Coast. Their two previous meetings with Egypt have both ended in 1-0 defeats.
Egypt are highly fancied to join Ghana from Group D into the next phase of this tournament, but they’ll need to switch on against Mali in this group opener here in order to strengthen and justify their claims as being among one of the teams to go deep into this competition.
The Egyptians head into this tournament on the back of a morale-boosting run of three wins on the trot having secured World Cup qualifying wins over Congo 2-1 away and a 2-0 home win over Ghana along with a friendly international win over Tunisia.
It’s been a few years since we’ve seen Egypt appear in this tournament, as their last participation was back in 2010, but they hold a decent pedigree at this level as they’d previously won their last nine matches on the trot, and are indeed unbeaten in their last 19 matches overall in the Africa Cup of Nations.
