Manchester City took a huge step towards qualifying for the group stages of the Champions League last week when they registered an emphatic 5-0 win away to tonight’s opponents Steaua Bucharest in the first leg of this Champions League play-off.
City now return to the Etihad Stadium for Wednesday night’s second leg with one foot firmly planted in the group stage already, and now just need to avoid a 6-goal margin defeat on home soil to progress.
On the domestic front, Manchester City have also made a great start to the new Premier League season under new manager Pep Guardiola as they’ve won both of their matches to date with wins recorded over Sunderland and Stoke City with 2-1 and 4-1 wins respectively. Incidentally, Manchester City have kept clean sheets in their last three Champions League matches on home turf against Dynamo Kiev, PSG and Real Madrid.
Visitors Steaua Bucharest were literally blown away in their own back-yard by Manchester City in last week’s first leg demolition, and now face an almost certain exit from the Champions League as they look to attempt to overhaul tonight’s hosts by a six-goal margin.
Highly unlikely to be fair, but they have to attack from the whistle this evening to stand any chance of achieving what would be a mammoth result. The Romanian outfit had previously beaten Sparta Prague 3-1 on aggregate to reach the play-off stage in this competition.
But having achieved just two away wins from their last ten away matches at this level, I fancy the hosts to finish the job here on Wednesday night and to keep a clean sheet in the process as City pick off Steaua Bucharest on the break.
