It’s off to Finland next and a look at the Finnish Veikkausliiga with my featured pick being Monday night’s clash between hosts IFK Mariehamn and visitors Inter Turku at the Wiklöf Holding Arena with the home side looking to post a fifth league win on the trot.
Recent wins over SJK, PS Kemi, Ilves and PK-35 Vantaa have lifted IFK Mariehamn level with HJK Helsinki at the top of the domestic top flight with both teams on 37 points; all three points tonight would therefore provide Mariehamn with a cushion over their title rivals.
Mariehamn’s overall home record stands at a solid looking 5-3-1 12/6 and they’ve won their last three on home turf, and they’ve also kept six clean sheets to date this season at home too. Striker Orgill (8 goals) and Brazilian midfielder Diego Assis (4 goals) are the ones to look out for anytime goalscorer.
Visitors Inter Turku have continued to struggle in the Veikkausliiga this season and they head into tonight’s encounter in Mariehamn on the back of four straight league defeats. Losses to KuPS, SJK, VPS and RoPS has resulted in Inter dropping down to third from bottom in the division, just one point above the relegation play-off position.
The story doesn’t get any better when looking at their away record which stands at a poor 1-1-6 6/13 following six straight defeats on their travels, and only FC Lahti possess a worst away record than them in the whole of the Veikkausliiga.
Inter Turku have managed just one clean sheet away from home all season too, and this could again be their undoing at Mariehamn this evening.
