Matt’s Saturday Tips – Saturday 19th September

Championship Tips

Cardiff City V Queens Park Rangers

Kick-Off: Saturday 19th September – 15:00 GMT

Competition: English Championship

Fourth placed Cardiff take on QPR at the Cardiff City stadium this Saturday afternoon as the Welsh outfit aim to make amends for their weekend woes and continue their winning run after notching up a vital victory away at Reading in midweek. QPR, however, have only managed one win in six games so they’ll be aiming to double their win tally with a surprise victory away in Wales.

Cardiff were setting the standards at one point after three wins from their opening four starts in The Championship. However, they hit a lean patch which seen them suffer their first back-to-back defeats of the season, losing away at Doncaster (2-0) and at home to Newcastle United (0-1). However, although the defeat away at Doncaster did come as a surprise, the latter defeat at home to Newcastle wasn’t as much, as Newcastle are a tough proposition and the ‘Magpies’ will certainly be firm promotion candidates this year.

Cardiff didn’t stay on the losing track for too long though, with their impressive 1-0 victory at The Madjeski, against Reading, enough to end their two match losing run. Now they must build upon that fine result and take advantage of an underachieving QPR, at home.

QPR, apparently, have the resources to challenge for promotion but they’ve yet to show any class or quality that they might actually do so. One win in six is more like relegation form than promotion form but it’s still early days and a win away in Cardiff would certainly do the morale at the club a world of good.

QPR, though, have come a cropper against even the poorer sides in the league, with Plymouth, Blackpool, Nott’m Forest & Peterborough all stealing points of QPR. All the teams mentioned are sides that probably won’t get anywhere near the the main bulk of promotion contenders so if QPR can’t even compete with the smaller sides, how will they cope against one of the top dogs, like Cardiff City? Well, we think we know the answer, DIRE!

If Cardiff are to have any realistic chance of putting their name into the promotion hat they will need to beat any side that is suffering a lull in form. QPR are certainly a side with very little form, with Rangers yet to score more then once in any game in the league this season. That’s awful, but one of a select few statistics that makes QPR look a terrible bet on paper and Cardiff a stunning punt. Cardiff to make it two wins in two looks a stunning bet, especially at the odds, and they should comply without too many scares.

Newcastle United V Plymouth Argyle

Kick-Off: Saturday 19th September – 15:00 GMT

Competition: English Championship

Newcastle entertain a Plymouth side who’ve yet to win this season at St. James Park. The Magpies have took to the Championship like a duck out of water while the Pilgrims have struggled to stay a float. Will the ‘Toon Army’ cruise to a comfortable victory or will Argyle rock the Newcastle boat? So many questions but only one answer – Newcastle will find life in front of the Plymouth goal easy going and they look a steal to exploit an unconvincing Plymouth defence on more than one occasion.

Newcastle have been priced up at 8/15, very short indeed, to locate the Plymouth goal at least twice at St. James Park. A feat which shouldn’t be too difficult to reach despite the fact that Shola Ameobi won’t feature for Newcastle for at least two months. Ameobi was just finding his feet in this league, probably his level in all fairness, but injury has put short his impressive start. His absence has been felt with Newcastle failing to score more than one goal in each of their previous three league encounters. A worrying statistic if you’re following me in on this selection.

However, although the above information might turn your stomach, we mustn’t forget that they’re preparing to face a terrible Plymouth side, one that has yet to register a victory this season. Argyle have acquainted themselves with the pit of the league after losing their last five fixtures, conceding twelve and scoring just four. They’ve conceded five goals in their previous two away outings and, to make matters a whole lot more embarrassing, even Derby put two past them. If Derby can somehow put two goals past you, a team that were humiliated on home soil in midweek by Barnsley, succumbing to a 3-2 defeat, then you know you’re a club in serious trouble.

Newcastle’s recent goalscoring lull will be a slight concern but they’ve been gifted a luscious home fixture to boost their striking confidence. Andy Caroll should get a starting berth up front, possibly alongside Nile Ranger, but we could be relying on the likes of Kevin Nolan, Joey Barton & Danny Guthrie to strike the touchpaper here.
